Enhancing Cat Welfare
In the United States, there are more cats in homes and shelters than dogs. Many of these cats will be confined at some point in their life whether its simply within a home or a cage at the shelter or vets office. In a home, cat owners care about their cats behavior particularly in terms of their interactions with humans such as preventing fear and aggression, as well as their consistent use of the litter box. In a shelter, cat welfare is important for adoption and health. In a vets office, decreasing stress speeds recovery.
My research with seeks to investigate the optimal ways to manage, house, and handle cats in confinement. This research was conducted with Dr. Candace Croney and Dr. Judi Stella. Thus far, I've written two informational handouts and helped conduct a study about coping styles in cats.
